Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. Starring: Jennifer Lawrence (X-Men First Class), Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and Liam Hemsworth (Knowing) Release Date: March 23rd, 2012

Immortals Tops Box Office

Immortals beat expectations with a $32 million domestic opening for a first place finish at the box office. That’s $7 million more than Relativity Media predicted for the R rated picture, and the best opening ever for one of the studio’s pictures.

The turn out was a solid young male demographic, with 75 percent of the audience being under 35 and 60 percent male. The film also gave a boost to the sagging 3D market, with 66% of sales coming from 3D screens.

Immortals is about Theseus (soon to be Superman Henry Cavill), a mortal, who is chosen by Zeus (Luke Evans) to lead the fight against the evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). The fate of mankind and the gods are both at stake.

Real Steel Tops Box Office

Real Steel knocked out the box office competition with an $8.7 million opening. That sets it up for a solid $27 million opening weekend in a traditionally slow time of year for movies. However, with a budget exceeding $110 million, not including marketing costs, the film will need good word of mouth to gain the legs it needs to go from “good opening” to “profit maker” for the studio.

Is the Halo movie back on?
Has the Halo movie finally fought its way out of development hell? Information included in a French press release for a book based on the videogame suggests a movie is planned for release in 2012 and is being made in cooperation with some major names.  “A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks,” says the press release for Halo: Cryptum, after a little translation.
So, is it happening?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Repeats Top Box Office

Strong word of mouth and positive critical reviews helped propel Rise of the Planet of the Apes to a second straight number one showing at the box office this weekend. An estimated $27.5 million pushed its 10-day domestic total to $104.9 million. Overseas the film soared, jumping $40.5 million to bring its international total to $75 million. That puts the worldwide total closing on $180 million, greatly exceeding studio expectations and sparking talk of a sequel.

This week’s genre entry, Final Destination 5, opened in third place with $18.4 million.
