Syfy Cancels Sanctuary

Syfy has canceled its first run series Sanctuary after four seasons.

From Mark Stern, Syfy President of Original Content:

“We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series. In addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide,” Stern said in a release, “Sanctuary was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques–including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology–and Emmy-nominated visual effects. It’s been an amazing ride and we look forward to our next project with Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler.”

Series star Amanda Tapping tweeted about the cancellation to her fans:

“We love and adore you. Thank you for the love and support. Now to the long dark tea time of my soul.”

Awake and The Secret Circle Canceled

More genre show casualties on TV as NBC cancels “Awake” while The CW axes “The Secret Circle.”

Both shows have struggled in the ratings. “Awake” started strong with 6 million viewers for its premiere, but tumbled quickly to a 2.5 rating/4 share average. That put it at a dismal rank of 21 out of 29 shows on NBC.

“The Secret Circle” was low rated overall, with a 1.2 rating/2 share, only good enough for 109th place overall. However, for The CW that performance wasn’t too bad and it was their second-highest-rated program behind it’s lead in “The Vampire Diaries.” Unfortunately the show regularly lost 33 percent of its “Vampire Diaries” lead in audience and The CW is hoping that a different show will fare better.

Fringe Gets a Final Renewal

Fox has renewed Fringe for a fifth, and promised last, 13 episode season. That should be good enough to ensure Fringe makes the rounds in syndication.

Fox Broadcasting’s President of Entertainment Kevin Reilly said:

Fringe is a remarkably creative series that has set the bar as one of television’s most imaginative dramas. Bringing it back for a final 13 allows us to provide the climactic conclusion that its passionate and loyal fans deserve. The amazing work the producers, writers and the incredibly talented cast and crew have delivered the last four seasons has literally been out of this world. Although the end is bittersweet, it’s going to be a very exciting final chapter.”

Executive producer and co-creator, J.J. Abrams said:

“We are thrilled and beyond grateful that Fox – and our fans – have made the impossible possible: Fringe will continue into a fifth season that will allow the series to conclude in a wild and thrilling way. All of us at Bad Robot are forever indebted to our viewers and the amazingly supportive Fox network for allowing the adventures of Fringe Division to not only continue, but to resolve in a way that perfectly fits the show.”

Fringe has long struggled in the overnight ratings, but tends to perform much better when playback audiences are counted.

Game of Thrones Renewed for Third Season

The demo reel for SyFy’s Blood & Chrome. The official synopsis:

“Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome” takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a young, talented fighter pilot, William Adama (Luke Pasqualino), finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful Battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and in pursuit of the intense action that the Cylon war promises, Adama quickly find himself at odds with Coker (Ben Cotton), the battle-weary officer to whom he reports. With 47 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle just as much as Adama craves the start of it. Though they clash at first, the two men forge an unlikely bond when a routine mission turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

UPDATE: Turns out this was a demo reel and SyFy has officially canceled it as a television series. The pilot may be aired as a special. SyFy originally conceived of the show as an online digital series. After Caprica tanked Blood & Chrome was elevated to television. SyFy is reportedly reconsidering the show for the original online only concept with a much lower budget.

Save Terra Nova with Dinosaurs

Terra Nova star Jason O’Mara is asking fans to #saveterranova by sending plastic dinosaurs to Fox, saying:

“If you want to address your package of little plastic dinosaurs to somebody at Fox, send them to president of the network. He’s a good guy so keep it friendly please. Mr Kevin Reilly, Fox Broadcasting Co, PO BOX 900, Beverly Hills, CA 90213.”

Terra Nova is an expensive production and its ratings have been low. Rumor has it that the well received, and much cheaper, Alcatraz will replace Terra Nova  so long as its ratings hold up. Overseas Terra Nova is a much bigger success, which may be the only reason it hasn’t already been canceled.

Past fan efforts have saved other shows from extinction, with the prime example being the post-apocalyptic drama Jericho. Cancelled after its first season, fans flooded the network with peanuts (a reference to a line at the end of the season ending episode) and a surprised CBS revived it for a seven episode second season. Although critical reviews were positive, the ratings were worse than ever and the show was again given the axe.

O’Mara is also asking fans to create viral buzz for the effort by using the #saveterranova tag in their Twitter posts.
