Doctor Who Premiere Gains in US, Slips in UK

The Doctor Who season-six premiere, “The Impossible Astronaut”, delivered the best US ratings ever for BBC America. The episode had 1.3 million viewers, an improvement of 71,000 from the second place show, which just happens to be last season’s premiere of Doctor Who.

The news isn’t as good on the other side of the pond.

The news from the other side of the pond wasn’t as positive, however. The  BBC reports that viewership was down to 6.5 million from 8 million for the April 2010 premiere when Matt Smith took over the title role. While this is a significant drop, it is worth noting that the UK market is much smaller than the US market. The 6.5 million figure is an average audience share of 36.7%. For comparison, the best rated show in the US is Dancing with the Stars, which carries approximately 13% of the audience share each week.

BBC to Air Elisabeth Sladen Tribute

The BBC will broadcast special called My Sarah Jane: A Tribute To Elisabeth Sladen following the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who on Saturday. Sladen passed away on April 19, 2010, shocking her fans. She was only 63 years old.

“Elisabeth Sladen created one of Doctor Who’s best loved and most enduring characters, Sarah Jane Smith,.” says the official press release for the show. “For over 35 years she brought the feisty, compassionate journalist to life, creating a figure that was adored by audiences of all ages – truly a heroine whose appeal had no boundaries. This 15-minute programme is both a tribute and a celebration of Elisabeth Sladen. It brings together stories from friends and colleagues and draws on a rich archive of material to remind us of Sarah Jane’s journey, from companion to the Third Doctor to the central character in CBBC’s award-winning The Sarah Jane Adventures.”

The first episode of the new season will be dedicated to the actress, with BBC America making its own commemoration during its broadcast of the premiere episode later the same day.

Wonder Woman Will Get Short Shorts

Fan’s that didn’t like the pants look for the new Wonder Woman can rest easy: She will get short shorts afterall.

NBC president Robert Greenblatt told TVLine :

“There was an initial outcry about the long pants – you know, skintight pants as opposed to those little shorts [worn by Lynda Carter in the original TV series]. But the shorts were always planned. They are actually used in the final confrontation when she beats Veronica Cale (played by Elizabeth Hurley).”

Fringe Ratings Improve After Renewal

Last week Fringe hit a series low (1.3 rating) in the adult 18-49 demographic. This week it bounced back to a 1.5, improving viewers to 3.9 million. The show augments its viewership with strong DVR numbers that push its overall rating to a 2.6.

The better figures come on the heels of a somewhat surprising full 22 episode renewal by Fox for a 4th season. After several schedule moves and erratic ratings over the course of its run, Fringe was moved to Friday’s in what was widely regarded as “death slot” positioning.

Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly is a fan of the show and said:

“Fringe has truly hit a creative stride and has distinguished itself as one of television’s most original programs. The series’ ingenious producers, amazingly talented cast and crew, as well as some of the most passionate and loyal fans on the planet, made this fourth-season pickup possible,” said Reilly. “When we moved the show to Fridays, we asked the fans to follow and they did. We’re thrilled to bring it back for another full season and keep it part of the Fox family.”

SyFy Announces 14 New Series

SyFy has put out an impressive list of 14 new shows that are either ready to air or are in active development.  On the down side for more serious genre fans is that 10 of them are reality shows, some with dubious to non existent ties to Science Fiction.

Of the scripted shows, two will be half hour shows, and one will be the already announced (we’re sorry about Caprica) Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. This July will see the launch of the hour long scripted drama Alphas. July is also when the hit shows Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Haven return to original episodes.

NEW SCRIPTED SERIES

Alphas — Premiering in July — Alphas follows a team of ordinary citizens whose brain anomalies imbue them with extraordinary mental and physical abilities. Taking the law into their own hands, the unlikely team, led by Dr. Leigh Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Oscar nominee David Strathairn) investigates cases that suggest other Alpha activity to uncover what the CIA, FBI and Pentagon have not been able, or willing, to solve. These gifted individuals must balance their quirky personalities and disparate backgrounds with their not always visible powers as they work to solve crimes, stop the ticking time bomb and catch the enemy.

Battlestar: Blood & Chrome – Luke Pasqualino (Skins-UK) and Ben Cotton (Hellcats) star in Battlestar: Blood & Chrome, which takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama (Pasqualino), barely in his 20′s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to one of the most powerful ships in the Colonial fleet…the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade-long war in favor of the desperate fleet. Three Inches — In Three Inches, professional daydreamer and underachiever Walter Spackman is struck by lightning and develops a unique “super” power — the ability to move any object using just his mind… but only a distance of three inches. He’s soon immersed in a world of extraordinarily ordinary people like himself and learns that “super” is just a state of mind. The pilot is written by Harley Peyton (Twin Peaks), who also serves as executive producer. Fox Television Studios is producing with executive producer Robert Cooper, through his company Landscape Entertainment.

Me and Lee — Me and Lee is about a down on his luck 20-something who goes in for back surgery, but the procedure doesn’t go well. Enter Lee Majors, who claims he has the perfect solution. He entices the young man into his ultra high-tech lab and makes him bionic. Majors becomes the unlikeliest of mentors helping the young man get his life back together. Jenji Kohan, the executive producer and creator of Weeds, serves as the executive producer of Me and Lee along with the writer Matthew Salzberg, Allan Loeb and Steven Pearl. Produced by Lionsgate.

Culture Shock with Tommy Lee– This one-hour investigative travel show follows Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee as he attempts to uncover the various rituals, symbols and other mysteries of secret societies around the world. Tommy Lee will dig into the history behind the secret society, search out its meeting locations and members, and meet with former members to reveal the society’s rituals and deepest secrets.
